On her third take, Mrs Bell stopped pretending to buy oranges.

“Could we keep walking, please?” the assistant director called.

She pointed across the street. “That sign is wrong.”

Above her old laundrette, the film crew had hung a board reading BELL’S CLEANERS.

“It’s meant to be 1987.”

“Yes,” she said. “I was there.”

They had paid her forty pounds to walk past the fruit stall in a red coat. Her daughter had called it a pleasant way to spend an afternoon. Nobody had mentioned watching strangers rebuild a place where she had spent thirty-one years.

“It was Bell & Daughter,” she said.

The director came over with a paper cup. “Was your daughter working with you then?”

“She was six.”

He smiled.

“She folded the small towels. Badly. Her father said the sign was ridiculous.”

“And you put it up anyway?”

“Not immediately. The signwriter wanted twelve pounds extra.”

Traffic waited behind a barrier. Someone checked a watch.

“We can fix it digitally,” the director said.

Mrs Bell looked at the board, then at the young woman carrying a ladder.

“Or she could turn it over.”

The woman lowered the ladder. There was plain timber on the back.

Mrs Bell borrowed a marker and wrote BELL. She drew an ampersand, rubbed it out with her sleeve and tried again. Then she added DAUGHTER in smaller capitals.

“It wasn’t centred,” she explained.

When the cameras rolled, she walked past the oranges without stopping.

At five, she found her daughter waiting by the barrier.

“Did they let you act?”

“Mostly walking.”

Her daughter noticed the sign.

For a moment, neither spoke. Then she lifted her phone.

“Stand underneath it, Mum.”

Mrs Bell moved into position, then beckoned impatiently.

“Give someone the phone.”

Her daughter stepped beside her.

“Now,” Mrs Bell told the young woman with the ladder. “Get the whole sign in.”
