The seabed had been knocking for three weeks before anyone thought to knock back.

Iona, the survey engineer, found the pattern beneath a drilling report: six impacts, a pause, six more. The crew called it loose equipment. Headquarters called it an acceptable delay.

She lowered a steel rod beside the drill and struck it twice.

Two knocks returned through the headphones.

“Echo,” said Director Venn.

Iona struck five times, then three.

Three came back. Then five.

Venn stopped chewing his lunch.

Their concession expired at midnight. Unless the drill reached the mineral seam, another company could claim the site. Venn ordered a final test, then extraction.

Iona fitted six small hammers around the drill. For an hour, she sent patterns into the rock. Answers came from farther away each time, travelling beneath the seabed like footsteps through a ceiling.

At eleven forty, Venn reached for the drill switch.

“We cannot surrender a fortune to a noise.”

Iona opened the live channel to headquarters.

She asked Venn to invent a rhythm.

He frowned, then tapped his pen against a mug: quick, quick, slow, quick.

The seabed answered.

“Again,” she said.

He tried something complicated. The hammers recorded the reply from seven different directions.

Headquarters remained silent.

Then a voice asked, “Can you establish boundaries?”

Iona looked at the bright mining grid on her screen. Their straight lines crossed hundreds of answering points.

“Not tonight.”

Midnight passed. The concession expired.

For the next month, Iona worked without a drill. They exchanged patterns, mapped responses and learned one reliable thing: striking twice meant someone would listen.

The first formal order for the new listening station arrived on a Monday.

Under PURPOSE, headquarters had written RESOURCE ASSESSMENT.

Iona crossed it out.

She wrote INTRODUCTIONS, signed her name, and knocked twice before lowering the next instrument.
