About this research · Sources, method & limitations
An unreliable connection does not have to stop a writing session. But opening a document once is not a dependable offline plan.
For a client brief, prepare a small working set before leaving your connection: the brief itself, the current copy draft and a short list of questions. Keeping that set small makes it easier to know which documents are ready and which version deserves attention.
Google Docs can support offline writing after online setup in a supported browser. Enable offline access, select the files you need, check readiness and try a non-confidential test document before relying on it for client work. Review your edits after reconnecting; this guide does not claim a hands-on test or guaranteed synchronisation result.
Set up offline access while you are online
Section 1 of 4Google supports offline creation, viewing and editing for Docs, Sheets and Slides. On a computer, preparation requires Chrome or Microsoft Edge, the Google Docs Offline extension and sufficient storage. Private browsing is not supported. Google's setup instructions.
Select the documents you actually need
Section 2 of 4In Drive, right-click each relevant Google document and select Make available offline. Use Ready for offline, then Offline preview, to check availability. That is more useful than assuming every recent file will be accessible. Drive's offline guide.
Run a small rehearsal
Section 3 of 4Before depending on the setup, test it with a disposable document containing no confidential information.
Reconnect, then review
Section 4 of 4Google says offline edits are applied when you reconnect. Its guidance warns that new changes replace earlier changes and points to version history for reviewing edits. Do not treat the return of Wi-Fi as proof that the final wording is correct. Drive's syncing guidance.

In Google Drive settings, turn on Offline. Google also provides offline controls through Docs settings. Use a device you are permitted to store the documents on, especially when the brief contains client information.
The practical goal is not to download your entire working life. It is to make tomorrow's writing session possible.
Select the documents you actually need

For a client brief, consider a separate preparation page containing:
- The decision the project needs to support.
- Approved terminology and essential facts.
- Questions that still need an answer.
- A short outline of the next draft.
These are suggested working notes, not additional requirements from Google. Avoid copying sensitive material unnecessarily. Include only what your task and the client's rules allow.
Run a small rehearsal
Before depending on the setup, test it with a disposable document containing no confidential information.
Mark that document for offline use, let preparation finish, then temporarily disconnect your computer. Try opening it and adding a harmless sentence. Reconnect afterward and check the result.
This rehearsal is an editorial precaution, not a claim that every device or account will behave identically. It can reveal a preparation problem while you still have time to address it. Do not test by deleting browser data or by using the only copy of an important client draft.
Google's document-status icon beside the title shows offline readiness. A work account may have offline access disabled by its administrator. Only one account per browser profile can have offline access enabled; separate profiles are an option for multiple accounts. Account and readiness guidance.
Reconnect, then review
Google says offline edits are applied when you reconnect. Its guidance warns that new changes replace earlier changes and points to version history for reviewing edits. Do not treat the return of Wi-Fi as proof that the final wording is correct. Drive's syncing guidance.
For shared work, tell collaborators which section you intend to revise. After reconnecting, read the affected section and resolve any overlap before sending the client a link. Our guide to named versions and client revisions explains how to keep useful checkpoints and review earlier wording.
Treat anything beyond the prepared documents as a separate dependency. A website linked inside your brief is not something to assume will work without a connection.
Prepare, rehearse and review
- Prepare online
- Action
- Enable offline access and choose the brief, draft and question list.
- Output
- A deliberately small working set.
- Stop when
- Stop if local storage is not permitted or offline access is disabled.
- Check with a test file
- Action
- Check readiness, disconnect briefly and edit a disposable non-confidential document.
- Output
- A rehearsal result you can inspect after reconnecting.
- Stop when
- Do not rely on client work offline if the rehearsal fails.
- Review after reconnecting
- Action
- Check the edited section, document status and any overlapping collaborator changes.
- Output
- Reviewed wording before the next client handoff.
A useful offline setup is modest: a few prepared documents, a successful rehearsal and a review when you return online.
Questions before working offline
Is opening the brief once enough?
Do not rely on that alone. Select the required document for offline use, check readiness and rehearse with a non-confidential test file.
Can two Google accounts use offline access in one browser profile?
Google documents one offline-enabled account per browser profile. Use separate profiles if you need offline access for multiple accounts.
Will a website linked inside the brief also work offline?
Do not assume so. Check linked resources separately and prepare only the reference material you are authorised to store locally.
Documentation rechecked on 2 November 2026. Documentation-based guide; no hands-on offline test is claimed.
