About this research · Sources, method & limitations
A screen recording can look fine in a media player and still cause problems when you import it into an editor. Before recording a long tutorial, check both the recording format and the editing workflow with a short sample.
Start with the container
Section 1 of 4OBS supports containers including MKV, MP4 and MOV. These package the video and audio streams; compatibility also depends on the codecs inside them.
Test the whole route
Section 2 of 4Choose a recording folder you can find easily. Record 30 seconds with speech, screen movement and any sound sources you intend to use. Stop normally, then import the result into your actual editor.
Remux when the container is the obstacle
Section 3 of 4For an MKV recording that needs an MP4 container, open File → Remux Recordings in OBS. Select the recording, choose the output destination and run Remux. OBS also documents an “Automatically remux to mp4” option under Advanced settings for workflows that consistently need it.
Know the remaining limits
Section 4 of 4Hybrid formats are another option when your installed OBS version supports them. OBS documents Hybrid MP4 from version 30.2 and Hybrid MOV from version 32.0. Codec compatibility still matters: OBS warns that PCM audio in MP4 is not supported by every application; Hybrid MOV may be a better fit in that case.
Start with the container
OBS supports containers including MKV, MP4 and MOV. These package the video and audio streams; compatibility also depends on the codecs inside them.
OBS describes MKV as resilient when recording ends unexpectedly, although some editing software handles it poorly. Traditional MP4 and MOV require finalisation, creating a risk if recording is interrupted. Hybrid MP4 and Hybrid MOV are different: OBS designed them to combine interruption resilience with wider compatibility. Avoid treating every MP4 option as the same choice.
Test the whole route
Choose a recording folder you can find easily. Record 30 seconds with speech, screen movement and any sound sources you intend to use. Stop normally, then import the result into your actual editor.
Check that the picture appears, speech is audible and sound stays aligned with the image. If you use separate audio tracks, inspect them individually in the editing timeline rather than assuming media-player playback proves everything was captured.
Remux when the container is the obstacle
For an MKV recording that needs an MP4 container, open File → Remux Recordings in OBS. Select the recording, choose the output destination and run Remux. OBS also documents an “Automatically remux to mp4” option under Advanced settings for workflows that consistently need it.
Import the resulting file and repeat the checks before removing the original. A successful remux message does not confirm that the editor supports every codec or that your microphone was recorded correctly.

Hybrid formats are another option when your installed OBS version supports them. OBS documents Hybrid MP4 from version 30.2 and Hybrid MOV from version 32.0. Codec compatibility still matters: OBS warns that PCM audio in MP4 is not supported by every application; Hybrid MOV may be a better fit in that case.
The useful habit is simple: record, import, inspect, then begin the full session. Keep a known-working setup instead of discovering an incompatible file after an hour of recording.

Research note: documentation for OBS recording formats editor handoff was checked on 29 October 2026. Container compatibility does not ensure codec support or microphone capture; Hybrid MP4 and MOV also have different minimum OBS versions. No hands-on product test was performed.
